OTA-215 Pediatric Practice

This course will provide evidence-based knowledge in occupational therapy strategies and intervention techniques and environments, assessments, and laws and regulations that impact pediatric OT services. Content includes common developmental disabilities including congenital, hereditary, or acquired conditions for children ranging in age from birth to 21 years old. Diagnoses explored will be those that affect or limit a child ability to engage in physical, cognitive/perceptual and psychosocial skills that allow for engagement in occupation-based interventions and activities. Lab activities will focus on applying skills necessary to prevent, remediate, compensate, adapt, and promote participation in activities relevant to the pediatric population. Student will also develop clinical professional skills to effectively communicate with patients/families, caregivers, clinicians, and teachers. Through community service experiences and interactions students will learn the role and responsibilities of the OTA in various environments, which may include early intervention, school-based, residential, clinical, transitional, and vocational settings.
