OTA-265 Geriatric Practice
Through study of the aging process, this course will provide evidence-based knowledge using frames of references and theories to develop occupational therapy strategies, intervention techniques, discharge planning, and advocacy that impact the geriatric population. Assessments, screenings, and observation strategies will be used to explore occupational performance skills that impacts persons, groups, or populations. Students will explore physical, neurological, cognitive, perceptual, sensory, and psychosocial areas relevant to occupation- based activities and interventions. Lab activities will focus on knowledge and clinical reasoning necessary to prevent, remediate, adapt, and promote participation in occupations. Students will develop health literacy skills to effectively communicate with patients, families, caregivers, clinicians, and others. Community experiences will expose students to the roles and responsibilities of the OTA and training in marketing and quality improvement at facilities.
